This form should be downloaded, filled in, and
then posted as an attachment to an email message in our FirstClass
classroom. Please post the SE to the folder titled "self evaluations," with
a little padlock icon.
Two midterm self-evaluations of your work in
this class will be required, and at the end of the quarter a final SE will
be due. Three weeks into the quarter I will ask you to post your responses
to the following questions to the SE folder in the classroom.
Please remember: You will need to keep precise
records of everything you do related to this course during the quarter,
because this is all to be very exact - no estimates or approximations (except
for section 1). These materials will be a large determinant in my assigning
your final grade.
The Questions
section 1: An accurate estimate of the amount
of time you've spent online per week.
section 2: An exact record of all book-reading
assignments so far and the dates due.
a. Did you do the assignment? What percent
of it?
b. Did you do it on time?
Section 3: An exact record of online lectures
that have been assigned so far and the dates due.
a. Did you do the assignment? What percent
of it?
b. Did you do it on time?
section 4 : A record of any extra reading you've
done and whether or not you took notes on that reading, or discussed it
at any length with others.
section 5: An exact record of all study question
assignments and dates due.
a. Have you done the assignments?
b. Have you done them on time?
section 6: An accurate record of your completion
of online discussion assignments. Did you participate early in the
week so that others could respond to your comments?
Your answers to this question might look like this:
Discussion Q on Socrates' guilt. 3 posts over four days
Discussion Q on civil disobedience, 5 posts over 3 days
etc
section 7: Reading other people's postings.
a. Did you read everyone else's postings in
the classroom? Approximately what percentage of them did you read?
b. Did you read everyone else's postings in
the study questions folder? Approximately what percentage of them did
you read?
c. Did you read everyone else's postings in
the research projects folder? Approximately what percentage of them did
you read?
section 8: Have you done other related writing
this quarter? Journals? Short papers? Personal reflections? Emails to friends/family
about philosophical issues?
section 9: Have you gotten your Research project
OK'd with the instructor yet? Was it OK'd on time (end of the fourth week)?
(Don't forget to complete a detailed self-evaluation of your project when
it has been completed. See the page for project
SE guidelines.)
section 10: Tests and exams.
Show me a record of how you have done so far on each exam & quiz.
section 11: Keep a complete record of how you've
done on the memorization and recitation of your quotes.
a. What percent of them have you completed?
b. What percent of them did you complete on time?
section 12: Have you done any
other "extras" so far that are related to this course?
section 13: Have you taken good notes on your
readings, or scribbled marginal notes?
section 14: Now here's where you do a self-evaluation
in two parts:
a. What criteria do you think should be used
to assess the progress and work of a student in a philosophy course such
as this one, especially one done online? Include all criteria you
think are important. And then
b. How have you done so far on each of those
criteria? A good way to do this might be to to have two vertical columns
(if your computer allows you to do this); in the left column list the
criteria, and in the right column write how you have done so far against
each criterion. (Or any other arrangement that works for you.) Be pretty
complete on this one.
section 15: Now given all this, what grade do
you think you are earning for this course so far? (Please figure your grade
on the 4.0 scale.) Please give your reasons for this estimate.
And finally,
section 16: What recommendations would you make
to yourself in order to do even better in the remaining weeks of this quarter?
